Wood Store — by ISHA OVERSEAS
A Legacy Rooted in the Soil, Grown into Global Craftsmanship
Every great enterprise has a beginning that has little to do with the industry it eventually conquers — and ours is no different. Our story does not start in a factory or a boardroom, but in the open fields of Uttarakhand, under the care of a man who understood the value of patience, hard work, and the land itself.
A Legacy Rooted in the Soil
Shri Ram Sharan Das Saini, our grandfather, was a farmer who cultivated vast agricultural holdings with quiet discipline. He built a life around the rhythms of the soil — sowing, tending, harvesting — and in doing so, instilled in his family a work ethic that would eventually take root in an entirely different industry.
Farming teaches patience and an intimate understanding of natural materials, and though none of us knew it at the time, those same lessons would one day shape how we understand and work with wood.
His son, Ajeet Saini, spent his early years assisting his father in the fields, learning the discipline of agricultural life firsthand. But Ajeet possessed something more — a sharp eye for opportunity.
As the local trade in raw timber began to grow, he recognized the potential of the wood business long before it became the thriving industry it is today.
In 1972, he took a bold step away from the family's agricultural roots and established a Saw Mill, entering the business of raw wood sale and auction.
To Furniture Craftsmanship
The early years of the Saw Mill were built on volume and variety. Ajeet Saini dealt in the sale and auction of premium hardwoods — Sheesham (Indian Rosewood), Acacia, and Mango wood — species that would later become the backbone of the furniture export industry in India.
He understood timber not just as a commodity, but as a material with character, grain, and story — knowledge that came from years of handling, grading, and trading it.
As his expertise deepened, Ajeet Saini saw a natural progression: rather than simply selling raw timber, why not shape it into something more valuable?
This insight marked a turning point. The business gradually evolved from raw wood trading into wooden furniture manufacturing, transforming the Saw Mill from a timber yard into a genuine craft enterprise.
This was more than a business pivot — it was the moment our family transitioned from traders of raw material to creators of finished products.
The Mill Was A Second Home
For the next generation, the mill wasn't just a business — it was a second home.
Naveen Saini spent much of his childhood on the mill floor, watching planks get cut, sorted, and shaped, absorbing lessons about wood grain, quality, and craftsmanship long before he could have articulated them in business terms.
This early, hands-on exposure gave him something no classroom could — an instinctive understanding of the material that would define his career.
Yet Naveen's path wasn't singularly focused on business from the start. He pursued his Bsc degree while also excelling on the football field, playing competitively and representing at the Santosh Trophy level in 1998 — one of India's most prestigious domestic football tournaments.
That discipline, competitive drive, and team-oriented mindset from his years as an athlete would go on to shape his approach to building and leading a business.
Taking the Family Legacy to the World
Upon completing his education, Naveen Saini made a decisive and ambitious choice: rather than continuing solely in the domestic furniture trade, he set his sights on the international export market.
In 1997, he founded ISHA OVERSEAS, a firm built on the family's decades of accumulated wood expertise, but aimed squarely at global buyers.
Today, the firm's products and craftsmanship are proudly presented to the world under its brand name, Wood Store.
The early days were modest. ISHA OVERSEAS began by executing local projects, building a reputation for reliability and craftsmanship within the domestic market.
But everything changed when the firm took a chance and participated in the EPCH (Export Promotion Council for Handicrafts) Fair in New Delhi — one of the largest and most influential platforms for Indian handicraft and home décor exporters to connect with international buyers.
That single decision opened doors the family could scarcely have imagined a generation earlier. Buyers from across the world took notice of the quality, craftsmanship, and reliability that ISHA OVERSEAS brought to the table — and international orders began to follow, laying the foundation for what would become the globally recognized Wood Store brand.
